Can you explore Machu Picchu?
If you want to hike your way to Machu Picchu, you must do it with a tour. However, it is also entirely possible (and quite easy) to visit Machu Picchu on your own, tour-free. This can either be done as a day trip from Cusco or by staying overnight in a neighbouring town and taking a bus or walking up to the ruins.
Do you need to be fit to visit Machu Picchu?
Treks to Machu Picchu vary in difficulty and length, but all require a basic level of fitness. In general you will be trekking anywhere between 10-15km a day, for up to six days on the longer routes (i.e. Choquequirao or Salkantay / Inca Trail Combo).
